Ty Aberaman Specialist Care Centre is a 20 bedded Independent Hospital based on a core and cluster module. It specialises in the short and long term rehabilitation of residents with varying mental health disorders. The Centre is situated in a small semi-rural village, one mile from Aberdare Town and approximately 20 miles from Wales capital city of Cardiff.
The Hospital
The Centre consists of a main core building with 12 single bedrooms and three clusters, two of which are three bedded bungalows and one two bedded bungalow. The bungalows are attached to the main core by way of covered porch ways. The main core has a communal television lounge with pool table, dining room and bathrooms with separate toilets. There is also a small lounge known as the quiet room. The bungalows are independent units with a kitchen diner and lounge each. All have a bathroom and separate toilet. The Centre was purpose built and the residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms and help choose redecoration products, curtains, furniture, carpets and linen.
The Treatment
The care at the Centre is given by qualified mental health nurses, a community psychiatric nurse and care assistants. These are complimented by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and Senior Nurse rehabilitation service. The residents are actively encouraged to participate in the setting of their individual care plans and are all reviewed on a monthly basis. Multi-disciplinary team meetings are held weekly where decisions on residents progress and the future plans are made. Monthly residents and staff meetings are held to encourage ideas to be brought forward.
The Facilities
The Centre is visited twice a week by an Occupational Therapist and an occupational therapy assistant attends three times a week. Our in-house activity assistant ensures that there is a wide range of rehabilitation skills practiced and also a varied activity programme allowing greater scope for the residents to be re-integrated into the community. The range of activities includes shopping trips to local shops and market, visits to the cinema, country parks and local public houses. In-house activities such as cooking, art, pool, games, quizzes, gardening, group music sessions and general discussion groups take place. Holidays are arranged throughout the year and the residents decide where and when they would like to go.
