How to find us

Maes Y Dderwen is a 17 bed Independent Hospital providing specialist assessment, treatment and rehabilitation service for male patients with a learning disability who are likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act (1983). It provides a service for patients who have a past history of offending behaviour, which has either resulted in significant problems in the community or is reasonably expected to do so.

The Hospital

Maes Y Dderwen is a 17 bed Low Secure Independent Hospital providing accommodation for 17 people. The main accommodation is housed on the top two floors where 15 single bedrooms are situated. There is a two bedroom rehabilitation flat located on the ground floor. Each of the main accommodation floors also has living and dining areas as well as ample toilets and bathing facilities. The ground floor flat is designed to help individuals develop their self care skills prior moving to a more community based service. The Hospital also benefits from a fully equipped Occupational Therapy Kitchen as well as meeting and conference facilities. There is also a large garden and patio area.

The Treatment

Maes Y Dderwen is staffed by a team of Qualified Learning Disability and Mental Health Nurses together with a team of appropriately trained Support Staff. The hospital is supported by a senior consultant psychiatrist, forensic and clinical psychologists, qualified occupational therapist as well as therapy assistants and educational officers. All care is based upon a person centred approach to promote positive behaviour and independence skills with a view to being integrated into more community based services. Maes Y Dderwen promotes Craegmoors’ communication strategy called “Your Voice” which ensures that each individual, based on their preferred method of communication, is able to have a voice on how their supported care is provided. Monthly patient meetings are held where individuals are able to represent the views and voices of fellow residents. This is extended to a voice at area, divisional and national level. Maes Y Dderwen liaises with families, community organisations, social services departments and purchasing authorities to support Person Centred Care Planning and ensures full account is taken of social, emotional, cultural and spiritual needs of all individuals.

The Facilities

Maes Y Dderwen is located in a rural setting but close to the small town of Ystrad Mynach. The property has undergone an extensive refurbishment during 2007 to enable the provision of a high quality environment appropriate to the needs of the patient. A particular feature of note includes a separate two bedroom rehabilitation flat, occupational therapy kitchen, activities room, conference facilities and a spacious garden and patio area.
