Craegmoor understands that helping someone with an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) such as Asperger’s Syndrome can be a challenge. That is why we have developed and provide a range of innovative services which ensures a quality of life for each individual we support. At Craegmoor, we aim to help those with autism to lead fulfilled, independent lives by providing just the right level of support.

We know that everyone diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Condition has their own individual abilities, needs and preferences, which is why we always involve people using our services in deciding how they are supported. Craegmoor has developed unique assessment tools to help individuals and staff to better understand the specific nature of their autism and their wants and wishes.

“Having an understanding of my own autism makes a big difference to me... I don’t know why no one explained this to me before.” - An individual who has used our services, talking at a Priory Group conference on autism

  • Residential options

  • Support in accessing employment opportunities

We are committed to providing innovative support, designed to not only identify challenges but celebrate the talents and skills of every person we support. We aim to support people with autism to develop the skills they need to make sense of the world around them and to enable them to fulfil their goals and ambitions in the most appropriate way for them. We have a dedicated Quality team with professionals who have specialist knowledge in this area to ensure the best practice is achieved for each individual.

Understanding autism and individual needs

When someone comes to Craegmoor to seek our specialist support services for an Autistic Spectrum Condition, we will complete an Autism Profile to help us to better understand a person’s interests, strengths, gifts and their need for support. This makes it easier for staff to understand the nuances in an individual’s condition and to identify cognitive abilities that may require focus. The autism profile is a working document that is regularly revised as we get to know each person we support better. It is used to inform all care, support and activity planning.

“Joe knows every character in Star Wars and can tell you what they do and say in each of the films but he can’t make a cup of tea or cross a road safely – autism can be so diverse.” - Member of support staff

Autism is a developmental condition and people who have autism or Asperger’s syndrome vary widely in their needs, strengths and abilities. Common characteristics can include:

  • Difficulties with social interaction
  • Impaired language and communication skills
  • Unusual patterns of thought and physical behaviour

By working with people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, Craegmoor can help individuals to face the challenges presented by their symptoms and can work towards leading an independent life though informed choice.

Individual involvement in autism support

At Craegmoor, we strongly advocate that people with autism need to be involved in how they are supported, so we encourage their involvement in staff training and sharing their stories through:

  • Discussion groups
  • One-to-one discussions and story development
  • Autism conferences - providing a opportunity for staff to hear people with autism and their families talk about their own experiences

Living with autism and Autistic Spectrum Conditions can be challenging, but there is always support available should you need it.
