Wheelhouse

The Wheelhouse supports 4 young adults with severe learning disabilities, communication difficulties and Autism. We aim to provide a safe and homely environment, where all individuals can make their own choices about the support they receive. We do everything we can to improve the health and wellbeing of the individuals we support and as a team we are focused on building positive outcomes for everyone.

Overview of Service

Our professional and friendly staff team, who are trained on a continuous basis, offer support and choice for young adults with severe learning disabilities, communication difficulties and Autism. We aim to enable everyone living at The Wheelhouse to lead an independent life, wherever possible.

Positive reinforcement and a high staff ratio provide opportunities for individuals to develop their daily living skills, supported by the philosophy of gentle teaching. The service we deliver is based on the belief of individuals' rights and choices.

All individuals are involved in designing their own Person Centred Plan, with staff support. The plans are tailored to suit individual needs and provide the correct level of support required. They also enable all individuals to make their own choices about the support they receive. We encourage and support people to recognise and identify their goals and ambitions and how they would like to go about meeting them.

What It's Like to Live Here

There are many activities to get involved with at The Wheelhouse, both in and out of the service, and everyone helps to choose and plan which activities are available. Some activities include shopping, going out for meals, going to the cinema and attending the local sports centre.

Day centres are available and offer opportunities for community involvement for young adults.

As the service is so close to the sea front and pier, individuals often go for scenic walks around the area.

The Surroundings

The Wheelhouse is located on the edge of St Leonards-on-Sea and is 1.5 miles from the town centre, the main line station and the coast.
