Potton House

Our ethos is based on person-centred care, exercising a non-task approach when interacting with all at Potton House. The emphasis is on an individual's presentation and needs.


Overview of service

There is a good skill mix of experienced registered general nurses, registered mental health nurses, carers, an administrator, and other support staff. The ratio of care staff per individual is on average 1 to 2. We work very cohesively with a dedicated GP practice, psychiatrist as well as other professionals such as chiropody, dietician etc. The home is also rated as 2 stars, Good by the CQC.


What it's like to live here

We have an Activity Co-ordinator who works cohesively to meet the social needs of individuals, including taking people to outings such as cinema and cream teas. People who live at Potton have a choice to wake up in the morning when they want to and have their breakfast.

They also can have choice of what they want to eat, whether it's breakfast, lunch, or tea. They do have the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful, tranquil environment with relaxation music played to help those with agitation. People living at Potton have the opportunity to have meals with their families; relatives can also visit at a time suitable to them, we also accommodate families who work.


Surroundings

Potton House is located within Biggleswade Hospital Grounds and has open views from all angles across the countryside. It is easily accessible to Biggleswade Town Centre and is also on the commuter belt to London, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.


Service facilities

Potton House supports 24 people with mental health needs, including people with dementia. This facility is fully funded by Bedfordshire Primary Care Trust. There are facilities to cater for people with physical disabilities and ramps for wheelchair access. The bedrooms are en-suite and people can bring their own belongings to maintain their individuality and sense of belonging in terms of their own family backgrounds. The service also enjoys transport facility. There is a mini bus which individuals can use to go for outings to places such as the cinema or for cream teas. Food is freshly cooked and there are two chefs who are trained to an advanced food handling standard; the kitchen has achieved a 4 star rating following an inspection by Environmental Health. In addition to that, the home has access to the support of a dietician to advise on individuals who have difficulty with their nutritional needs. The biggest factor regarding Potton House is that it is purpose built and has a fantastic large garden at the back where individuals can enjoy walks as well as watch rabbits.
