Caerlan is a secure hospital that supports individuals who are detained under the Mental Health Act. Our highly trained staff team are committed to providing individuals with a safe environment in which to live as independently as possible, through the development and review of individual support plans.

Overview of Service

Caerlan is a secure hospital that supports individuals who are detained under the Mental Health Act. The main hospital has the facilities to support 8 people and there is also a bungalow with 2 bedrooms, which is used as a step down service for people who want to practice more independent living skills, such as budgeting, cleaning, cooking and shopping.

People living at Caerlan often have a learning disability as well as a mental health illness and may display challenging behaviour. Caerlan staff support individuals to find appropriate ways of communicating their needs.

Caerlan focuses on an individual's recovery, building their self esteem, confidence, abilities and skills. This is carried out at each individual's own pace and we validate and celebrate everyone's successes. We provide support for people to move on to group services and to re-enter the community.

Person Centred Planning is at the centre of our philosophy of support and we make sure that individuals are fully involved in setting goals for what they want to achieve. Everyone living at Caerlan has an individual plan of activities for their individual needs to help them progress and live more independently which Occupational Therapy helps them develop.

What it's Like to Live Here

There are a wide range of activities to get involved with at Caerlan, both within the service and in the community. Everybody living here helps to choose and plan which activities are available and what they would like to do. On weekends we try to get out as much as possible and going to the beach and Porth Cawl are some of our favourite places to visit in the summer. Cardiff bay is not far away and sometimes we go to exhibitions or to a show at St David's Theatre.

During the week people go for walks and many people also enjoy arts and crafts.

Surroundings

Caerlan is situated on top of a mountain with great views of the surrounding area. There are good transport links and Cardiff is only a 20 minute drive away.

Service Facilities

Caerlan is an old farm house with beautiful views. There are qualified nurses on duty 24 hours a day to provide support to those who currently use our service. All bedrooms are personalised to ensure there is a homely feel to the service. We also have disabled access.
