Maes Y Dderwen
Summary
Independent Hospital
Maes y Dderwen is a 17 bed low secure independent hospital providing accommodation for 17 people. The main accommodation is housed on the top two floors where 15 single bedrooms are situated.
Overview of service
There is a two bedroom rehabilitation flat located on the ground floor. Each of the main accommodation floors also has living and dining areas as well as ample toilets and bathing facilities. The ground floor flat is designed to help individuals develop their self care skills prior to moving to a more community based service. The hospital also benefits from a fully equipped occupational therapy kitchen as well as meeting and conference facilities. There is also a large garden and patio area.
Maes y Dderwen supports people who have a learning disability and mental health condition. All patients are sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983 and are detained. Maes y Dderwen offers high levels of support for those who need it. We are inspected each year by the Health Inspectorate Wales and they continue to check that we are making steady improvements to the hospital.
The hospital offers 24 hour support to its patients and there are always staff on shift who are able to assist you.
What it's like to live here
There is an occupational therapy kitchen at the hospital where patients are encouraged to prepare and cook meals, undertake their own laundry and develop and enhance skills in caring for themselves. There is an emphasis on doing things as you would in your own home.
Every patient is assessed by the multi disciplinary team and different sessions may be recommended. These range from psychology sessions, education sessions, art psychotherapy and occupational therapy. Maes y Dderwen has a spacious garden which is maintained by the horticultural project.
Surroundings
Maes y Dderwen is located in a quiet, rural setting but close to all local amenities and the small town of Ystrad Mynach. There was an extensive refurbishment recently to enable the provision of a high quality environment appropriate to the needs of the patient. A particular feature of note includes a separate two bedroom rehabilitation flat, occupation therapy kitchen, activities room, conference facilities and a spacious garden and patio area.
Service facilities
The two hospital cars are available for staff to take patients out on community leave and there are many local attractions that can be accessed. There are many lovely walks in the area where spectacular views can be seen across the whole of Caerphilly.
