What it's like to live here

Cefn Carnau is a busy hospital with individuals taking part in many different activities on a daily basis. Depending on how well individuals are, they may access the community on Section 17 leave. Staff may accompany people on the bus or in one of the three hospital cars to activities outside of the hospital. Cefn Carnau is on a bus route, so individuals can be encouraged to access the community utilising the skills of using public transport.

There is an Occupational Therapy Kitchen at the hospital where individuals are encouraged to prepare and cook meals, undertake their own laundry and develop and enhance skills in caring for themselves. There is an emphasis on doing things as you would in your own home.

Every individual is assessed by the multi-disciplinary team and different sessions may be recommended. These range from psychology sessions, educational sessions, art psychotherapy and occupational therapy. Cefn Carnau has beautiful gardens which are maintained by the horticultural project which patients can be actively involved in. We grow our own vegetables in our allotment so we have planted the seeds and seen the growth through to being able to eat it on our plates. On the wards, there are always activities and sessions which are tailored to meet the needs of the individual.

Surroundings

Cefn Carnau can be reached by bus from the centre of Caerphilly which is only 5 miles away. There are also three hospital cars which staff can use to take people out in. Caerphilly has lots of shops and is a vibrant town centre, based around the beautiful caste in the Centre. The castle has a moat which has lots of ducks and geese on it that enjoy visitors when they feed them. The surroundings of the hospital are rural with views across the valleys and the town centre of Caerphilly. The views from the hospital which is at the top of the mountain are spectacular and provide a focus point for many patients in the service.

Service facilities

Those who use our service are encouraged to personalise their bedrooms.‘

The three hospital cars are available for staff to take individuals out on community leave and there are many local attractions that may be accessed. There are many lovely walks in the area where spectacular views can be seen across the whole of Caerphilly.

With the beautiful gardens at the hospital, there are lots of outdoor activities available from walking round the perimeter track, badminton, tennis, basket ball and other outdoor games. We are able to have barbeques in the summer and as we have such lovely grounds, other Craegmoor independent hospitals are able to join us for some outdoor activities such as sports events and parties.
