OLDER PEOPLE LEARNING DISABILITIES MENTAL HEALTH

'Health care improving but stigma remains'

01 December 2008

Progress in mental health services in Wales is being made, but stigma and bureaucracy remains a problem, it has been reported.

According to the Western Mail, new legislation to tackle the problem of under-funding of mental health services in the country is set to be addressed by a private member's bill put forward by Jonathan Morgan.

However, the paper states that the most vulnerable people in society are still being failed by the system, which it claims can be linked to financial pressures and a lack of understanding of the underlying issues.

Jenny Randerson, Welsh Liberal Democrats spokeswoman for health, told the news provider: "I welcome the suicide action plan for Wales, but we need to go further in identifying and supporting people suffering from mental anguish and distress."

According to the Daily Post, £10 million has been set aside to train professionals such as teachers and police in mental health first aid, to help cut the number of suicides in Wales.
