Mental health services to be centralised in Ayrshire
01 December 2008
Mental health services in Ayrshire and Arran are set to be centralised at the Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine as part of a £53 million plan. Services for the elderly do not come under the new centralisation plan and will continue to be provided at Ailsa Hospital in Ayr.The consolidation process follows a four month review in which health professionals, service users and members of the public were consulted.Jim Crichton, director of mental health services, told the Kilmarnock Standard: "I am delighted with the board's decision to support a new build facility at Ayrshire Central Hospital for adult inpatient mental health services."He added that this option was preferred by the majority of both the public and staff at the trusts concerned and claimed the deal was a major step forward.Meanwhile, according to the December issue of the Psychiatric Bulletin, psychiatrists in Scotland are starting to view the new Mental Health Act 2003 more positively.
