Children's mental health services to be improved
20 November 2008
Extra support for children in school is one of a package of measures unveiled by children's secretary Ed Balls and health secretary Alan Johnson aimed at radically improving mental health services for the young. Following the independent Child and Adult Mental Health Services review commissioned by the government in 2007, a report outlining future plans for children's services and child and adolescent mental health provision has been released.Government said that in direct response to the review it is setting up a National Advisory Council on Children's Mental Health and Psychological Wellbeing, which will ensure all recommendations are followed up and addressed. The council will be chaired by Jo Williams, former chief executive of Mencap.Ed Balls said: "The CAMHS review sets out a clear vision of how we can intervene early where signs of severe mental health issues such as self harm indicate a mental health problem."
