Free mental health support for London doctors

19 November 2008

A free and confidential service is being set up across London this week to provide support for doctors and dentists with mental health problems.

The new Practitioner Health Programme will be dedicated to healthcare professionals in the capital suffering from depression, stress, addiction and other conditions.

It will prioritise them for quick care within the National Health Service (NHS).

Dr Clare Gerada, a GP involved in the project, said: "There is a tendency for doctors and dentists to manage their own health concerns, to self medicate or to chat informally to colleagues."

"For this reason health concerns sometimes go unreported or unrecognised," she added.

According to PHP, sick doctors and dentists are entitled to confidential treatment in the NHS.

Practitioners that refer themselves to the service can rest assured their advice and treatment will not be passed on to a third party unless a patient's health is compromised as a result, the body said.
