University of Cambridge wins health services award

19 November 2008

The University of Cambridge has won an award that will allow it to set up a partnership with the National Health Service (NHS).

Awarded the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care, the university aims to use its new-found responsibility to improve daily hospital care for people suffering from depression, dementia, strokes and childhood mental illness.

Funded by the National Institute for Health Research, the collaboration will be led by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation Trust and it is hoped the new initiative will uncover new ways of testing treatments.

"This new partnership will undertake high-quality applied research and develop new ways of translating research findings into improved outcomes for patients," said Professor Sally Davies, director general for research and design in the NHS.

In related news, a study by scientists at Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute discovered the underlying molecular functioning of breast cancer drug Tamoxifen.
