'Early intervention with mental health treatment is crucial'
29 October 2008
Early intervention is crucial for the treatment of people with mental health problems or learning difficulties, according to new research. Sponsored by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, the Foresight report shows that a small increase in mental wellbeing leads to a large reduction in health problems in all age groups. The research also shows that there are many ways to tackle mental health issues in the UK, which costs England alone £77 billion a year.Professor John Beddington, chief scientific adviser to the government and director of the Foresight Programme, said: "There is good work being done but progress can be made and taxpayers money saved if government departments work together more effectively to tackle these issues."He claimed more money must be invested in spotting learning difficulties early in peoples' lives.Meanwhile, research by the University of Cambridge suggests that students with special educational needs feel neglected at break times, reports the Times.
