Schizophrenia drug trial questioned
27 August 2008
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested more data on a schizophrenia treatment developed by Johnson & Johnson (J&J). J&J has been sent a "complete response" letter from the FDA, but the firm has not been ordered to carry out a second trial for the new drug. The company said the letter outlined further questions that needed to be addressed.During J&J's clinical trial of the intramuscular drug paliperidone palmitate, which is taken once a month, psychiatrist David Hough found the anti-psychotic reduced the likelihood of a relapse in patients suffering from schizophrenia to between ten and 15 per cent.J&J halted the drug trial early because of the clear benefits of the drug, which was tested against a placebo.Paliperidone palmitate uses patented NanoCrystal technology developed by Elan Pharma International. If J&J comply with the FDA's requests paliperidone palmitate could provide a new treatment for patients suffering from schizophrenia in the near future, according to webmd.com. © Adfero Ltd
