OLDER PEOPLE LEARNING DISABILITIES MENTAL HEALTH

Autism sufferers missing out on care

07 August 2008

Sufferers of autism are receiving inappropriate treatment and end up in mainstream care as they fail to meet mental health and learning disability criteria, an autism service provider has claimed.

According to Lesa Walton, manager of Brookdale Care, nearly half of local health authorities had no formal way of managing people with autism who do not qualify for support from mental health and learning disabilities services, reports Caring Business.

She told a Laing & Buisson conference: "I do believe that there are enough people with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) [to make service provision worthwhile], but there is not adequate provision for them, and they will continue to fall through the gap."

Brookdale Care specialises in caring for adults with autism and asperger syndrome.

Set up over a decade ago, Brookdale has created a plethora of residential care services to meet the challenging needs of people suffering from ASD.
