Exercise can help in the early stages of Alzheimer's

15 July 2008

A new study has found that higher levels of physical fitness can prevent brain shrinkage in the early onset of Alzheimer's.

Researchers studied 121 people aged 60, of which 57 were in the early stages of Alzheimer's.

The participants underwent fitness tests, together with brain scans to measure the total brain volume.

According to the study authors, people with mild Alzheimer's who were "less physically fit" had four times more "brain shrinkage" than those with high fitness levels when compared to "normal older adults".

Jeffrey Burns, from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, said: "People with early Alzheimer's disease may be able to preserve their brain function for a longer period of time by exercising regularly and potentially reducing the amount of brain volume lost."

Recent research from Korea claimed that a plant-derived edible vaccine for Alzheimer's could be stored in tomatoes in the future, following successful tests conducted on mice.
