OLDER PEOPLE LEARNING DISABILITIES MENTAL HEALTH

Teen group set for adventure

04 July 2008

A team of teenagers with learning disabilities are being taught life skills through physical adventure.

The ten pupils from Willoughby School in Bourne are set to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award challenge.

According to the The Bourne Local, the students aged 14 to 19 have been given special targets by the award's governing body due to the "variety of difficulties" which they face.

They have been experiencing a series of smaller practise expeditions, camping trips and hikes in order to prepare them for the main challenge.

Darren Hobbs, teacher at the school, told the newspaper that the leaders take "a back seat" and "let the kids do as much as possible".

"We are trying to teach them independence, self-help skills and about team building – things that we might take for granted," he added.

Recently, the Sheffield Telegraph revealed that famous names from Sheffield, including former home secretary David Blunkett, are set to be "locked up" to raise money for people with mental health problems and learning disabilities.
