Film-makers win award for latest work

03 July 2008

A group of film-makers with learning disabilities are celebrating after their latest work picked up an award.

The members of Shoot Your Mouth Off (SYMO) in Hartlepool impressed audiences at the Colours In A Rainbow Film and Arts Festival with their work entitled Cared Witless.

Hartlepool Mail reports that festival organisers declared their work as "funny and true" and voted it best film on show.

Cared Witless tells the story of Glen Miller, who suffers with Down's Syndrome, and his shopping trip with a "personal assistant from hell".

The group, which has 15 members, formed in 2001 and have since made over 100 films which they both release on DVD and post on websites.

Karen Header, director of SYMO, told the newspaper that it was "absolutely brilliant" to win the award.

"It demonstrates to the wider world that people with learning disabilities have considerable skill and talent," she added.

The Huddersfield Daily Examiner recently reported that Carol Thomas, who has a son with hearing and sight problems, is releasing a short film to educate parents who have children with learning disabilities.
