RCP 'hits out at mental health funding'

03 July 2008

The Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP) has called for the establishment of a new mental health research charity.

It has drawn up its Fair Deal manifesto which highlights problems faced by people with mental health problems.

The college identifies the lack of funding as a key area which affects people, with mental health research receiving 6.5 per cent of total research funding compared to 25 per cent for cancer and 15 per cent for neurological diseases.

Over the next three years, the RCP plans to campaign to remove the inequalities and has called for the implementation of a new charity to fund research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems.

Professor Sheila Hollins, the president of the RCP, said that when talking to members and users there was a "recurring theme" among people that those with mental health problems "do not get a fair deal".

Meanwhile, local charity Hunts Mind is working to promote mental health issues and challenge stigmas in rural communities, reports Peterborough Today.
