Learning Disability Coalition 'slams government closures'
02 July 2008
A new survey has revealed the number of people with leaning disabilities that have had their care affected by outside influences. The Learning Disability Coalition survey, entitled Tell It Like It Is, questioned almost 700 people with a variety of learning disabilities and their carers. It found that 34 per cent of people had experienced a closure of their day centre or had been subject to increased charges for activities. The coalition claims that a number of councils in the UK "fail to offer adequate activities" to replace day centre closures.Carol Boys, chief executive of the Down's Syndrome Association, which is a coalition member, called on the government to "address shortfalls in funding and services"."These cuts are in addition to the rationing of care as eligibility criteria are tightened," she said.A recent Alzheimer's Society study showed that the average dementia sufferer pays at least £100 per week in care costs. The charity said that the "dementia tax" is "persecuting thousands of people". © Adfero Ltd
