OLDER PEOPLE LEARNING DISABILITIES MENTAL HEALTH

Writer hopes to inspire peoples' mental health fight

02 July 2008

A new book written by a man who suffers from mental health problems is set to be released.

It is hoped that Too Much Information, which was penned by Mark Magrs, will encourage other people to talk about their experiences with mental health issues, reports the Shields Gazette.

Mr Magrs, who is a qualified teacher, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder eight years ago and recently won the Northern Writers Award from New Writing North.

His book describes the "harsh reality" of living with his illness and the frustration of not being able to get another teaching job.

Mr Magrs told the newspaper: "For too long, mental illness has been a taboo subject. I want to dispel a few myths.

"Hopefully it [the book] will help people because they will realise they are not the only ones suffering."

The release of Too Much Information follows the launch of a new mental health magazine.

Entitled One in Four, the publication aims to challenge the stigma which surrounds mental health issues, reports the Press Association.
