Mencap 'aims to get people with learning disabilities into work'

 Mencap has launched a new campaign to get increasing number of people with learning disabilities into paid jobs. The charity has revealed that only ten per cent of people with a learning disability are currently in paid employment, reports the Guardian.Also however, it claims that 62 per cent of people in the UK believe that someone with a learning disability is "unable to work".Mencap's new I Want To Work initiative aims to increase the awareness among employers, saying that having a job increases peoples confident and sense of achievement.Dame Jo Williams, chief executive of Mencap, told the newspaper a person with a learning disability can "make a valuable contribution in the workplace"."To help people with a learning disability find employment, we need to challenge people's attitudes towards people with a learning disability. We want to show everyone how much a person with a learning disability can offer," she added.Bedford Today reports that a 17th Century water mill is set to be refurbished into a new visitor centre which will provide jobs for people with learning disabilities in the local community. © Adfero Ltd
