Mental health charity hit by criminals

19 May 2008

Criminals have stolen £17,000 of music equipment from a mental health charity which was set up as a tribute to rock legend Syd Barrett.

Escape Artists, the charity from Cambridge, is backed by the musician's sister Rosemary Breen and was set up using funds from the sale of some of her brother's items, reports Cambridge News.

The kit was stolen from the charity's van, ahead of a special concert at its base as part of The City Wakes, a celebration of Syd's music which takes place across the city.

Ms Breen told the newspaper that it was a huge setback and a terrible shock.

"If anyone out there can help we would be very pleased. If anyone has got guitars, PA equipment or instruments they can donate it would be fantastic," she added.

Syd Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd and left the group in 1968 after rumours of mental illness. He retuned to his home in Cambridge and lived as a recluse, finding solace in painting and gardening.

He died in his home in July 2006, from pancreatic cancer.
