Swindon woman wins Mencap's photography competition

16 May 2008

A woman with severe learning disabilities has won a national photography competition.

Caroline Purnell from Swindon won a gold award in Mencap's Snap! competition in the Through My Eyes category, reports the Swindon Advertiser.

The 23-year-old won a digital camera and the photo of Caroline looking at herself in the mirror will be on display at the Proud Camden gallery in London.

She will also attend the awards ceremony at the gallery which will be attended by Mencap's celebrity supporters.

Ms Purnell was entered in the competition by her mother, who sent a note with the entry explaining Caroline's situation.

She spoke to the newspaper, saying: "I wanted to enter the photo because it was a really nice picture of Caroline. We have lots of photos of her all over the house and we use pictures a lot to communicate with her."

Mencap says that 1,100 entries were received in the sixth annual Snap! Photography competition 2008, which was sponsored by Fujifilm and supported by the Sorrell Foundation.
