OLDER PEOPLE LEARNING DISABILITIES MENTAL HEALTH

New dementia ward for Malvern

08 May 2008

Round the clock care for dementia patients will be provided by a new Worcestershire facility if a charity's plans become a reality.

Friends of the Elderly also says the new unit will link two other homes in Malvern, the Malvern Gazette reports.

Friends of the Elderly already runs a home support service and day club in the area and has reportedly put the new unit idea to local politicians.

Tory parliamentary candidate Harriett Baldwin was among those consulted and was quoted by the paper as saying: "I know that the Friends of Malvern Hospital and the staff of Malvern hospital also welcome news of this proposed facility."

Friends of the Elderly would knock down a modern building between Perrins House and Davenham, which it already runs, to build the facility.

The organisation can trace its history back to 1905 and aims to ensure older people maintain independence and dignity in later life.

Recent research suggests women who are depressed are more likely to develop dementia if they are depressed while men are more likely to develop the condition if they suffer a stroke.
