Aspergers teenager a 'Super Kid'

08 April 2008

A teenager who suffers from Aspergers syndrome has been commended with a Super Kid award.

Alistair Penman supports his mother, who has multiple sclerosis, and also looked after his father as he battled cancer last year. The fourteen-year-old himself suffers from autism-related aspergers and a rare dysfunction in his larynx.

He told King's Lynn News: "I wasn't expecting it. When I heard all the things all these other kids had done I couldn't believe they would pick me."

Alistair told the crowd "I'm not worthy", as he accepted the award at the ceremony at King's Lynn Town Hall.

The Super Kids awards have been handed out for over 20 years. West Norfolk Major Kathy Mellish said: "You appreciate how humbling it is when these young people are so determined and care so much and it's completely selfless."

Asperger syndrome is a disability which affects how a person makes sense of the world, processes information and relate to other people, according to the National Autistic Society.
