OLDER PEOPLE LEARNING DISABILITIES MENTAL HEALTH

Boris ditches his bike for memorable fundraiser

28 August 2007

MP Boris Johnson is the latest well-known face to lend his support to the Alzheimer's Society, by announcing that he will take part in the charity's Memory Walk to raise funds for people with dementia and those who care for them.

The minister joined actress Sally Lindsay and broadcaster Tania Bryer at the countdown to the annual Memory Walk on London's South Bank to elicit support for the cause.

Memory Walk will take place on September 23rd and is expected to attract over 10,000 participants to around 300 individual walks at a range of venues including football stadiums and historical homes and it is hoped that over £250,000 can be raised.

Mr Johnson said at the launch: "Alzheimer's disease, and any form of dementia, is such a cruel disease. One in three older people in our country will end their lives with a form of dementia. That's why I'm delighted to be here today to support the Alzheimer's Society. I'll even get off my bike to support the Alzheimer's Society Memory Walks and I'm encouraging others to do the same!"

Tania Bryer added: "Last year my beloved father, Lionel, died with Alzheimer's disease. Memory Walks are a wonderful way of remembering all those affected by dementia, a terrible condition that robs a person of their identity and ultimately their life.

"By getting involved, you will enable the Alzheimer's Society to provide care services, information and research funding for a condition that will affect nearly a million of us in less than 20 years."
