OLDER PEOPLE LEARNING DISABILITIES MENTAL HEALTH

Elderly trapped when in own homes

22 August 2007

Elderly people who do not benefit from care homes are often trapped in their own homes, a study has revealed.

Due to infirmity and mobility issues, senior citizens can experience isolation due to being unable to leave the house, a survey commissioned by Help the Aged shows.

Some 22 per cent of pensioners said they struggled to navigate their own house, while 12 per cent said that taking a bath or shower presented challenges and 19 per cent could not manage the stairs.

More tellingly, an entire quarter of elderly people said they needed assistance to complete daily tasks.

One in five of the elderly people questioned said they were unaware of services which could make potentially life-improving modifications to their homes.

Help the Aged said that more must be done to ensure quality of life for senior citizens.

Senior housing police adviser for the charity, Joe Oldman, said: "It is ludicrous that older people are still considered a minority group when it comes to housing.

"In just 17 years, older people will make up nearly half of all new growth in households. Future housing policies must consider the needs of older people."
