Nice challenge submitted to High Court
27 April 2007
The Alzheimer's Society has today delivered its challenge to the ruling of the National Institution for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) to restrict access to Alzheimer's drugs on the NHS. Earlier this year, Nice hit the headlines by declaring that it would limit the amount of Aricept, Exelon, Reminyl and Ebixa made available for the price of a prescription, despite the fact that on average, the medicine would cost just £2.50 per day.A massive response from the public and various action groups and charities caused Nice to rethink its actions to allow only people only in the moderate stages the disease access to drug treatments. The Alzheimer's Society initially took their case to make the drugs available for all sufferers to the internal reviews board where the matter was dropped and it now hopes to win the argument through the High Court.Neil Hunt, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, commented: "The evidence we are presenting today highlights serious flaws in the process Nice has used. The decision is a blow for millions of people already devastated by Alzheimer's disease. "We have been left with no choice but to champion the rights of people with dementia and their carers in the High Court." © Adfero Ltd
