About The Shieling
The Shieling supports 10 people with learning disabilities and complex needs at our homely and welcoming premises in Harrogate. We aim to provide a safe environment where everyone can make their own choices about the support they receive.
Our approach to care:
At The Shieling, we do everything that we can to improve the health and wellbeing of the people we support, and as a team we are focused on building positive outcomes for everyone.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the process of creating a Person Centred Plan which outlines the level of support required for each individual, as well as clearly depicting their goals and aspirations and what steps are needed to achieve them.
What it’s like to live here:
Leisure activities are a strong feature of The Shieling and everyone is encouraged to discuss their particular interests with staff so we are able to support them to participate whenever possible. People enjoy activities such as swimming, shopping, going out for meals, watching football and rugby matches, going to concerts, socialising in pubs, bowling and going on trips to places of interest.
During the week people attend daytime activities outside of the house. These include computer sessions, gardening, arts and crafts and woodwork.
At The Shieling, people also enjoy going on walks and developing skills such as cooking, doing laundry and ironing. People are supported and encouraged to be part of meal preparations and all dietary requirements can be met.
The Shieling is a 15 minute walk away from the main town and the local transport link is a short walk from the house, along with local shops. The service is opposite a park with a cafe and other facilities. There is a local college and many other amenities nearby, including a swimming pool, a library and a bowling alley.
“I like going to college, staff supported me to sign up at the college.” – Person supported by The Shieling
