The Birches

About The Birches

The Birches is a specialist service developed to support the mental health support needs of individuals aged 18 years and over. The service is designed to assist in the gradual integration and rehabilitation back into the community.

Our approach to support:

The Birches focuses on providing innovative therapeutic treatment and support to each person on an individual basis. People living at The Birches are given both the support and encouragement to live as independently as possible and set attainable targets. All individuals have the opportunity to join in weekly house meetings and be offered individual support sessions to discuss areas of development that they would like to focus on.

Everyone is involved in the development of their own person centred plan – detailing their goals and ambitions and how they will go about achieving these. Individuals are encouraged to take as much responsibility as they can accept, and this will increase as they progress through the service. This ranges from managing their own finances and medications to joint management of the budget for house shopping for the two-bed flat areas.

The service at the Birches works towards achieving positive outcomes for the individual through a pathway back into independent living.

What it’s like to live here:

The service is near to the centre of the market town of Chesterfield and within short commuting distances to the cities of Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby. The town has numerous leisure facilities and an excellent shopping arena. The area has a good public transport network.

The service is close to Chesterfield College - which all suitable individuals have the opportunity of attending to enhance their skills development. The service offers regular internal and external activities, and these will all be managed through the agreement of those involved.

“I like it that I have so much involvement in my care plans and writing them, having easy access to them. Staff are willing to go through them with me and alter the plans if they aren’t working.” – Person supported by The Birches

The Birches consists of a large detached House with five individual en-suite bedrooms with full disabled access to the ground floor. There is a large kitchen with separate utility and dining rooms, and a large lounge.

There is also a two bedroom flat area, which provides greater independence for suitable individuals. This features a kitchen diner area and bathroom suite.
