Poole care home praised for providing “creative and innovative” care

The Moorings care home for adults with learning disabilities in Poole has been rated as 'good' overall for the quality of care it provides by the independent health and social care regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It has been rated 'outstanding' for being "responsive", and 'good' in the other four categories.

In the report following the inspection of The Moorings, the CQC said, "Staff were genuinely caring and kind, they treated people with patience and were constantly aware of their needs.

"People and staff enjoyed each other's company. Staff were proud of people's achievements.

"Staff provided care in a dignified manner. There was a calm relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the house. We saw interactions between staff and people. They were chatting, laughing, smiling with each other and this showed us they enjoyed each other's company."

Relatives gave feedback to inspectors that "staff were caring and had good relationships with their family members". Relatives are frequently kept up-to-date on how residents were doing, with photographs and by email.

When assessing the responsiveness of the home as 'outstanding', inspectors praised the "creative and innovative ways" used to provide care. Inspectors liked the way the home helped some residents to move away from more rigid routines and develop new, key life skills. Residents are also supported to take up activities and pursue the interests they enjoy, including going to the local shops, the zoo, the cinema, and a local night club and restaurants.

Residents in the house had started a superhero noticeboard where they had identified themselves and staff as certain superheroes. Staff and people had superimposed the people and staff's heads on to the superheroes.

The Moorings is located in Poole, Dorset. It provides support to people with physical disabilities and learning disabilities.

Martin Ashford, Registered Manager, said: "We are very happy with the outcome of the inspection; we have all worked extremely hard to ensure that all residents come first. We aim to provide a safe, happy and homely environment where the service users can be individuals, exploring their own needs, and where we can help them fulfil their goals. It's a fantastic achievement for all those involved in the service to be recognised by CQC during this inspection."

Sarah Hughes, CEO of Craegmoor, said: "Craegmoor is proud of the fact that this home has been rated 'good' overall, and is regarded as 'outstanding' for being responsive. It is great that the CQC holds the service in such a high regard, particularly in ensuring that the service offers an individualised and person centred approach."
