Rosehill case study - Tony’s story

Rosehill case study - Tony’s storyTony* received a serious assault whilst on holiday in Spain, resulting in a severe traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for three months. Life-saving surgery in Spain, including a craniotomy, stabilised his condition but a lot of work was still to be done.

He was flown back to the UK, where he was placed in a specialist brain injury unit. The referral was received at Rosehill after a number of weeks and the manager, as well as the deputy at the time, assessed him and it was agreed he was suitable for rehabilitation at Rosehill. Tony was keen to get better, however he had been given a poor prognosis from the hospital team.

Tony remembers asking the Deputy Manager how long she thought it would take to get better and received the reply "18 months to two years".

Tony was admitted to Rosehill unable to walk, using a wheelchair and needing full nursing and multidisciplinary care. He was totally dependent on others to meet all his daily needs.

After a period of intense rehabilitation and committed support from the team at Rosehill, Tony regained his daily living skills and independence. He was discharged from Rosehill able to walk and live independently in a flat with support from Supporting You services.

Whilst Tony continues to need some support, his ability and confidence has continued to grow. The amount of support he needs has decreased and he continues to live in his own rented flat. Since his discharge from Rosehill, he now has a young daughter that he enjoys caring for and spending time with. Tony has also recently completed a vocational course at the local college which will hopefully assist him in gaining employment in the future.

Tony continues to visit Rosehill and offers support to other people using the service there. He is keen to share his story to act as a positive role model and help other brain injury survivors on their roads to recovery using his personal experience.

Tony’s FIM+FAM outcomes over 18 months:

  • Grooming and dressing from 3 to 7
  • Locomotion from 3 to 7 (Wheelchair dependent to walking independently)
  • Stairs from 1 to 7
  • Emotions and adjustment from 3 to 6
