NHS to fund Wales's young onset dementia service

The NHS has agreed to provide funding for a special service dealing with adults suffering from young onset dementia.

Jan Williams, chief executive of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said that he will recommend the subsidies at a meeting of board members on March 23rd, after initially claiming the NHS could not afford to pay.

According to WalesOnline, the centre, situated in Cardiff & Vale, will receive enough funding for one year's operation if the green light is given, but its future after that point is still uncertain.

Dawn John, manager of the Cardiff branch of the Alzheimer's Society, which runs the service, said: "Both personally and on behalf of the users I am delighted. We have one more year of funding for the project, which is fantastic, but we have to make sure this project gets funded year on year."

Research carried out as part of the new Living Well campaign recently revealed that one in three people are uncomfortable around people with dementia.
