Local service gets its show on the road
A local service for people with learning disabilities has teamed up with the Wakefield Road Safety Team to host a special Independent Travel Workshop. The Lawrence service hosted the day to enable the people it supports to live more independently and safely.
The Lawrence is owned and operated by the leading independent provider Craegmoor, who support around 4,000 people with learning disabilities, autism, complex needs and mental illnesses, as well as older people, across the UK.
The Independent Travel workshop was held at The Lawrence itself and was designed to give people greater confidence when travelling around Wakefield’s busy city centre. In addition to lessons on crossing road junctions, the event included information on the importance of using seatbelts and general road safety.
The workshop was led by Tracey Wilshaw and Gemma Wayman from Wakefield Council’s Independent Travel Team. The team has been helping to make the city’s roads safer for almost five years, working with people from across the community.
Paula Stansfield, Manager at The Lawrence said:
“The Road Safety event was a fantastic opportunity to provide people with more information about travelling around independently and safely. Wakefield has got some really busy roads and everyone found it useful to learn about how we can all take greater care when travelling in town.
“At Craegmoor we’re passionate about enabling people to gain greater independence and achieve wonderful things. Workshops like this are just one of the ways that we support people to learn new skills and achieve their goals.”
Tracey Wilsher, Independent Travel Training co-ordinator said:
“The Independent Travel Team enable and encourage people to stay safe and travel safely on public transport. We work with children and adults with educational needs or learning disabilities and teach skills such as Road Safety, Personal Safety, Time, Money, Communication and appropriate behaviour.”
