South Wales Carers Nominated For Regional Awards

Wayne Thompson, Sandra Ward and Les Scrivens have today been nominated for the prestigious South West Care Awards 2010.

28th October 2010

All three candidates work for Craegmoor, a leading independent provider of support for people with learning disabilities, autism, complex needs and mental health problems, which supports around 4,000 people across the UK.

Wayne, Sandra and Les were nominated by each of their managers, as formal recognition of their commitment and dedication to the people they support. The awards ceremony will take place in Bristol next Friday 5th November, when the winners for each category will be announced.

Activities Co-ordinator Wayne Thompson, from Caerlan in Llantrisant, is a finalist for the Activity Organiser Award. Wayne has worked for Craegmoor for almost nine years and was nominated for the Award by his Manager Carla Rawlinson.

As well as organising a number of activities including swimming, cycling and cinema trips, Wayne has also gained a professional qualification which means he is now able to teach numeracy, literacy, IT and music to the people living at Caerlan.

Wayne's Manager, Carla Rawlinson said:

"Wayne is an absolute star and I nominated him for this award as he truly deserves it. Wayne is a fantastic Activity Organiser and really makes a difference to the people at Caerlan. He gets on with everyone we support and we're all very proud of him."

On learning that he had been nominated for a South West Care Award, Wayne said:

"I am thrilled to be nominated for this award. It's brilliant to be recognised for doing a job that I love. Seeing how the people Caerlan supports have progressed since I started teaching them, and knowing how much they enjoy the activities, makes my job really worthwhile. All of my colleagues and the people we support are a real pleasure to work with."

Sandra Ward, Kitchen Assistant at Ty Gwyn Hall in Abergavenny, has been nominated for the Ancillary Worker Award. Over the course of 15 years working at Ty Gwyn Hall, Sandra has moved from the Domestic Team to the Kitchen Team, excelling in both roles.

Sandra stands out for her loyalty and motivation. Even in her private time she's always thinking about the needs of those she supports at Ty Gwyn Hall to ensure that all their requests are catered for in the kitchen.

Shaun Cooper, Hospital Manager at Ty Gwyn Hall, nominated Sandra. Shaun said:

"I wanted to put Sandra forward for the Ancillary Worker award because of how loyal and conscientious she is. Whenever I ask her to do a job, I know I can rely on her to do it. She goes above and beyond to provide the best service for everyone.

"Sandra stands out for her personality. She spends time with people living here to develop good relationships and listen to what they want, and we all love her!"

Talking about her nomination, Sandra said:

"I'm completely overwhelmed about being put forward for this award - it came totally out of the blue. I'm so proud to be nominated for doing something that's just my normal job! I haven't been very well recently and coming to work with everyone at Ty Gwyn has really helped me get through it. I can't wait until the awards on the 5th!"

Senior Support Worker, Les Scrivens, from Princes Street in Cardiff, is a finalist for the Best Newcomer Award. Princes Street supports 5 people with learning disabilities and mental health problems, and Les has worked at the home for nearly three years.

After an earlier career as a plumber in the maintenance industry, Les decided to change to the care sector. Les is passionate about making sure everyone at Princes Street is happy, and he's a great team player.

Les said today:

"What I love most about the job is spending lots of time with the people we support and getting to know them better. We all get on really well at Princes Street and it's like one big family! I felt so good when I found out I'd been nominated - it's really great to be recognised for the work I do."
