Local Learners Make Sweet Treats At Community Cafe

Students from Strathmore College have been dazzling local people with their culinary skills at a local community café. The café is run as part of the Apedale Heritage Centre, a charity organisation run entirely by volunteers.

Strathmore College is owned and operated by Craegmoor, the leading independent provider for people with learning disabilities, mental illnesses, complex needs and autism. In total 32 residential learners and 14 day learners are supported at the college and encouraged to get involved in community with projects like the Apedale café.

The café is a real hit with local residents, who enjoy tasty treats made by the students, such as biscuits, cakes, scones and marmalade. As well as running the kitchen, Strathmore volunteers also take orders, operate the till and make sure the café is always spotlessly clean.

The learners have relished the opportunity to get to know people from the local community and see what it's like to run a business. As well as the life skills they learn, students can use their experience to gain a City and Guilds Retail Award Level 1.

After completing the Level 1 Award many learners will start working towards a diploma and others will eventually go on to study at unsupported colleges. Strathmore College enables and supports people to achieve their full potential and this project is just one of many where students have an opportunity to play an active role in the community.
