"Celebrating artistic talent in the community" says Craegmoor
Craegmoor’s Tall Oaks Care Home in Biddulph, Stoke-on-Trent, has celebrated artistic talent amongst the local older community by holding its first ever art competition exclusively for local older people. The event was a resounding success with just under 70 entries and much fun had by all.
The competition was open to anyone over 60 years old and living at Tall Oaks Care Home or in the town of Biddulph itself. Entrants were encouraged to send in their artwork in whatever form it took, be it traditional watercolours, abstract collages or cartoons.
An exhibition of artwork followed by judging and prize giving for the winners was held at the Tall Oaks Care Home on Monday 4th May. The judging panel included Mayor of Biddulph Wayne Rogers, the Chief Executive of the Approach Café local Alzheimer’s support group Will Boyce and June Brammer of the Stoke-on-Trent-based Beth Johnson Foundation, which campaigns for better recognition for the role older people play and challenges age discrimination.
Shafi Ullah, Manager of Tall Oaks Care Home, said today:
“ Each year Craegmoor holds an Artist of the Year competition open to everyone who uses our services throughout the UK, so this was really our inspiration. We know how talented many of Tall Oaks’ residents are so we thought holding an art competition would be a great opportunity for people to showcase their work to the wider community, as well as have lots of fun!
We’re also always looking for ways to engage with local communities and we are very keen for older people from the surrounding area to be able to join in the celebration of artistic talent in the community ”.
